Inside the QR code
How an SMS URI prepares a message without sending it
An SMS QR code stores a messaging URI with a recipient and optional body. The device passes those values to its default SMS application, where the user can review the destination, edit the text and decide whether to send.
Use a reachable international number
Country codes reduce ambiguity across regions, but the destination must still accept SMS from the user's carrier. Premium numbers and short codes require additional testing.
Encode the message body correctly
Spaces, symbols, line breaks and localized characters are URL-encoded so the message survives the handoff to the messaging app without truncating the URI.
State consent and charges nearby
The QR code does not replace campaign consent language. Explain expected message frequency, opt-out instructions and possible carrier charges beside promotional SMS calls to action.
SMS URI example
Recipient: +1 415 555 0198 ยท Message: BOOKING 4821 โ sms:+14155550198?body={encoded-message} โ The messaging app opens a draft to the selected number with BOOKING 4821 ready to edit and send.
Check before publishing
- Test on both iOS and Android because SMS URI separators can be interpreted differently by older devices.
- Keep campaign keywords short and avoid autocorrect-sensitive punctuation when a backend matches exact text.
- Confirm that replies are monitored and that the destination can receive messages from every target market.
Keep an SMS QR compact enough for fast campaign scanning
An SMS QR stores the recipient and may include a starter message. The message improves response quality, but every character adds data, so copy length, Unicode symbols and visual customization must be balanced against the size and conditions of the final placement.
Shorten the starter message first
Use a concise keyword, booking reference prompt or support question. Long text, emoji and accented characters can increase the encoded byte count and produce a denser QR that needs more physical space.
Design for imperfect campaign surfaces
Choose dark modules on a light solid background and test the real material. Fabric, corrugated packaging, receipts, outdoor glare and low-quality flyers can blur or reduce contrast compared with the screen preview.
Use logo and correction as a tradeoff
Keep any central logo modest and protect finder patterns. A higher error-correction level can tolerate some obstruction or damage, but adds modules, so compare both density and scan speed after customization.
Preserve quiet space around the response path
Leave at least four modules clear on every side and keep the instruction outside that area. Increase the code size for posters or moving audiences, and avoid placing it across folds, seams or highly curved packaging.
Test the composed message on real phones
Scan on iOS and Android and verify the recipient, spaces, line breaks, accents and short-code behavior. Confirm the message remains editable and is not sent until the user explicitly approves it.
