Remove friction from email enquiries
A mailto QR code turns a scan into a prepared email, reducing typing and keeping the enquiry format consistent.
Faster contact
Open a draft email immediately instead of asking people to type an address.
Consistent enquiries
Use a preset subject or prompt so incoming messages are easier to route.
Better printed calls to action
Connect flyers, packaging and signage directly to the right inbox.
Inside the QR code
How an email QR code builds a portable mailto action
The code stores a mailto URI containing the destination address and optional subject and body parameters. After scanning, the operating system hands that URI to an installed email application, which creates an editable draft.
Encode special characters safely
Spaces, line breaks, ampersands and non-Latin characters in the subject or body must be URL-encoded. The generator prepares those values so they do not break the mailto query.
Keep the user in control
A scan never sends email automatically. The recipient, subject and message appear in a draft that the user can change or cancel before tapping send.
Design for inbox routing
A clear preset subject such as a product code, location or campaign name helps support and sales teams filter incoming messages without asking customers to type it correctly.
Email URI example
Recipient: support@example.com · Subject: Order 4821 · Body: I need help with my delivery. — mailto:support@example.com?subject={encoded-subject}&body={encoded-message} — The default mail app opens a new draft addressed to support with the subject and message filled in.
Check before publishing
- Send a test from more than one mail app because line breaks and long bodies can be displayed differently.
- Use a monitored shared inbox rather than an employee's personal address for long-lived print material.
- Keep the prepared message short enough that users can understand and edit it on a phone screen.
Balance email convenience with a clean, scannable symbol
An email QR contains a mailto address and can also include an encoded subject and draft body. Those helpful defaults increase payload length, so the best design keeps the message useful while leaving enough visual margin for cameras and print variation.
Keep the prefilled draft concise
A recipient-only mailto code is compact. Long subjects, line breaks and a full message template add encoded characters and increase density; ask only for the context the sender genuinely needs.
Choose colors that survive office printing
Use dark modules on white or another very light solid background. Test brand colors on the actual printer because toner, recycled paper and low-ink output can reduce contrast even when a screen preview looks sharp.
Reserve logos for roomy layouts
Keep a logo away from finder patterns and use higher error correction when one is present. If the subject and body make the symbol dense, a plain code is usually safer than enlarging the logo.
Preserve four modules of empty margin
Do not let a card border, icon, caption or background artwork enter the quiet zone. Increase physical size when the code is placed on a counter sign or poster rather than a hand-held leaflet.
Test different default mail apps
Scan the finished artwork on iOS and Android and check at least two mail clients where possible. Confirm the address, subject, spaces, accents and line breaks appear correctly and that no email is sent automatically.
