Create a Google Maps QR code for a place or directions
Turn a Google Maps place, pin or directions link into a QR code so visitors can open the correct destination without typing an address.
- Place, pin and directions links
- Opens the app or mobile web
- Static or dynamic QR options
Google Maps link types
Choose what should happen after the map opens
A Google Maps QR code can show a place, a dropped pin, directions, a map view or Street View. Use the link that matches the instruction printed beside the code.
Business or named place
Open the place listing with its name, address, photos, hours and other public details available in Google Maps.
Address or dropped pin
Show a specific coordinate when a venue has no clear listing or the required entrance differs from the main postal address.
Directions to a destination
Open directions with the destination prepared and let Google Maps use the scanner's current location as the starting point when available.
Route with travel mode
Prepare driving, walking, bicycling, two-wheeler or transit directions where that mode is supported.
Map or Street View
Open a selected map area or panoramic view when visual orientation is more useful than a place listing.
Live location share
Use a time-limited location-sharing link only for temporary coordination, never as a permanent destination on long-lived print.

An address can still lead visitors to the wrong entrance
Street names can be duplicated, large buildings have several entrances and a business name may return multiple search results. A Google Maps QR code opens the place, pin or route you selected so visitors do not need to retype the address. The final route can still change with traffic, road access and the user's current location.
No address typing
Visitors scan and open the chosen map destination without re-entering a long or unfamiliar street address.
A more precise arrival point
A place listing, Place ID or dropped pin can distinguish the correct venue, gate, pickup point or building entrance.
Directions from the visitor's location
A directions link can leave the origin open so Google Maps starts from the scanner's current location when permission and device data are available.
Inside the QR code
Choose a Google Maps link that identifies the intended place
The QR code stores a normal HTTPS Google Maps URL. It does not store the map, calculate the route or guarantee that a road is open. Google Maps interprets the URL after scanning and applies the device location, available travel modes and current map data.
The Share button is the easiest starting point
Open the exact place, pin or route in Google Maps, choose Share and copy the link. Do not copy a broad search results page when the campaign promises one specific destination.
Place IDs reduce ambiguity for exact establishments
Google states that a Place ID is the best guarantee when linking to a specific establishment. A place name or address remains useful as a readable fallback.
Search and directions are different actions
A search link displays a place or matching results. A directions link prepares a route and can omit the origin so the user's current location is used when available.
Maps URLs require correct encoding
Constructed Maps URLs use api=1 and encoded parameters for queries, origins, destinations and waypoints. Spaces, commas, pipe characters and non-Latin text must be encoded correctly.
The app and browser can show different layouts
The same HTTPS URL can open the Google Maps app when installed or the mobile web experience otherwise. The place and action should remain correct in both paths.
A map QR is not a promise that the route is available
Traffic, construction, private roads, ferry schedules, travel-mode coverage and location permission can change the suggested route. Print a contact number or entrance note when arrival conditions are unusual.
Google Maps directions example
Destination: Ben Thanh Market, Ho Chi Minh City ยท Origin: current device location โ https://www.google.com/maps/dir/?api=1&destination=Ben+Thanh+Market%2C+Ho+Chi+Minh+City โ Google Maps opens directions to the destination and uses the scanner's current location as the origin when it is available.
Check before publishing
- Open the link in a private browser and confirm it selects the exact place instead of a list of similar results.
- Test from outside the venue so saved history or an owner's account does not hide an ambiguous destination.
- Check both the Google Maps app and a mobile browser.
- If the destination is inside a mall, campus or large building, use the correct entrance pin and add a short entrance note beside the QR.
- Do not use a live-location link for permanent print because access and duration can expire.
- After a business moves, changes its listing or closes an entrance, rescan every QR code still in use.
- Test the printed code outdoors when glare, distance, rain or low light are part of the real placement.
8 checks before printing a Google Maps QR code
The most common failure is not that the QR cannot be scanned. It is that the code scans correctly but opens the wrong branch, a broad search, an unsuitable entrance or an expired temporary location.
Copy the exact destination
Open the place card, pin or route first and use Share. Confirm the visible name and address before pasting the link into the generator.
Match the link to the call to action
Use View location for a place link and Get directions for a route link. Do not print Get directions when the QR only opens a general map.
Prefer an exact place or entrance
For chains, airports, campuses and shopping centres, check the branch, floor, gate and pickup point. A pin near the building is not always the usable entrance.
Control URL length and QR density
Copied URLs can contain long parameters. Keep a clean working share link, or use a dynamic QR when a shorter redirect and future destination changes are important.
Use strong foreground contrast
A dark code on white or a very light solid background is safest. Keep map imagery, roads and colored pins outside the QR's data area.
Keep any map-pin icon small
A centered icon must not cover the three large corner markers. Increase error correction carefully because it also makes the QR pattern denser.
Size for movement and distance
A code at a reception desk can be scanned nearby. Parking signs, event banners and roadside instructions need larger modules and a clear stopping point.
Walk or drive the final route
Test the code from a realistic starting point and verify the suggested arrival side, entrance and travel mode before producing signs.

Advantages & Limitations
Advantages
- Visitors open the destination without typing a long address.
- A pin or Place ID can distinguish the correct branch or entrance.
- Directions can begin from the scanner's current location.
- A dynamic QR can redirect old signs when a destination changes.
Limitations
- Internet access is normally required to load current map details.
- The QR code cannot control traffic, road closures or route availability.
- A broad search link can still show the wrong place among similar names.
- Static QR codes must be replaced when the stored map link changes.
From a map link to the correct arrival point
How does a Google Maps QR code work?

Share the exact place or route
Open it in Google Maps, choose Share and copy the complete HTTPS link.
Paste the link and create the QR
Use the Website tab, choose static or dynamic mode and customize the design.
Test the real arrival
Scan on different phones and confirm the place, route and entrance before printing.
Use cases

Stores and restaurants
Put directions to the correct branch on flyers, packaging, reservation messages and storefront material.
Events and weddings
Guide guests to the venue, parking entrance, check-in gate or after-party location.
Hotels and tourism
Help travelers find reception, pickup points, attractions and meeting locations without typing a local address.
Property listings
Connect a sign or brochure to the exact viewing location while keeping agent contact details nearby.
Campuses and large facilities
Use separate codes for visitor entrances, buildings, loading bays or departments that share one postal address.
Delivery and pickup
Show drivers the correct gate or handoff point and add a short instruction outside the QR code.
