Static QR codes — create once, use forever

A static QR code stores the content directly in its pattern, so the code itself needs no redirect server and does not expire. It is a practical choice for fixed WiFi details, vCards, text, packaging and long-term print.

Understand static QR

What is stored in a static QR code?

The scanner reads the data from the QR pattern itself. There is no QRCode-Gen redirect in between, but the result still depends on the type of content you encode.

The data is inside the pattern

WiFi credentials, contact details, text or the final URL are encoded directly. After download, the QR code does not depend on QRCode-Gen.

Offline depends on the content

Text, WiFi, phone and vCard data can be read without internet. A website or PDF link still needs a connection and a working destination.

No redirect tracking

QRCode-Gen does not receive the scan through a short link. The website you open may still collect its own normal traffic data.

Inside the QR code

Data length, density and scan reliability

A static QR code must fit all of its data into one symbol. Understanding density helps you choose a sensible size and avoid a code that works on screen but fails after printing.

More characters create a denser pattern

A short URL is usually easier to scan than a long tracking URL. A vCard with several addresses, notes and links also needs more modules than a simple name and phone number.

Printed module size matters

Do not judge only by the outside dimensions. Every individual square must remain large and clean enough for the camera at the intended scanning distance.

Error correction uses extra space

A higher correction level can recover from limited damage or a small logo, but it also increases density. Use it deliberately instead of covering a large part of the code.

The content determines offline behavior

WiFi, text and vCard data can be handled on the phone. A URL can be decoded offline, but the linked website, map or PDF cannot open until internet access is available.

Example: a static WiFi QR code

Network: QRCode-Gen Guest · WPA · password: coffee2026 — WIFI:T:WPA;S:QRCode-Gen Guest;P:coffee2026;; — The phone reads the network details and offers to join without opening a redirect page.

Check before publishing

  • Test the final printed size, not only the large preview on screen.
  • Leave a clear quiet zone at least four modules wide on every side.
  • Keep the three corner finder patterns unobstructed.
  • Scan with more than one iOS and Android phone before printing in volume.

Choose static QR only for content you can keep

A static code is simple and durable, but the printed pattern cannot be edited. Check the destination and the amount of data before committing it to packaging or other long-lived material.

Decide whether the content is truly fixed

WiFi for a permanent guest network, a phone number and a short instruction are good candidates. A campaign page, price list or frequently replaced file is usually safer as a dynamic QR.

Check every character before download

A misspelled URL, wrong phone number or incorrect WiFi password cannot be repaired inside an already printed static code.

Keep vCard and text payloads focused

Include the fields the scanner actually needs. Long notes, several addresses and unnecessary links make the symbol denser and require a larger print.

Use stable, direct links

The QR code may last forever, but a deleted PDF, expired shared link or abandoned domain will still stop working. Verify sharing permissions and long-term ownership.

Protect contrast and clear space

Use a dark foreground on a light, plain background. Do not place text, borders or decorative artwork inside the quiet zone.

Save the source and a print-ready file

Keep a high-resolution or vector export with the exact content used, so future print runs do not rely on a compressed image copied from a document.

Features

Everything you need for a reliable static QR code

Create and customize as many codes as you need for free. Export a print-ready file without a watermark.

Many content types

Create standards-based QR codes for websites, WiFi, vCard, text, email, SMS and phone numbers.

Custom colors and logo

Use brand colors and a centered logo while keeping enough contrast and uncovered data modules.

High error correction

Choose stronger recovery for a small logo or a label that may collect light scratches and dirt.

PNG, SVG and PDF

Use PNG for screens and office print, or a vector file for sharp labels, cards, posters and signs.

Flexible module styles

Choose classic square modules or a rounded style without changing the encoded information.

No account

Open the generator, enter the content and download immediately without registration or daily limits.

Private by design

The finished code opens its content directly instead of passing every scan through our redirect service.

The code itself does not expire

A downloaded static QR remains readable as long as the print is intact and its encoded content is still valid.

Advantages and limitations of static QR codes

Advantages

  • Free to create with no watermark or account requirement.
  • The QR pattern itself does not expire or rely on the QRCode-Gen redirect service.
  • WiFi, vCard, phone and text content can work without an internet connection.
  • No redirect means QRCode-Gen does not maintain a central scan history.
  • Colors, logo, module style and export format can be customized.
  • Suitable for commercial print with no limit on the number of codes created.

Limitations

  • The encoded URL, password or contact details cannot be changed after creation.
  • Long URLs and detailed vCards create a denser pattern that must be printed larger.
  • There are no scan totals, locations, device reports or campaign comparisons.
  • A typo or broken destination discovered after printing requires a new code and a reprint.
  • The QR image may remain valid while an encoded website, file or shared link becomes unavailable.

Scan reliability

Keep a static QR code easy to scan

Four checks prevent most failures on cards, labels, menus, documents and large signs.

Keep content short

Use only the necessary data. A short URL or focused vCard produces fewer, larger modules than a long payload.

Use strong contrast

Choose a dark QR color on a light, solid background. Avoid gradients, reflections and low-contrast brand combinations.

Leave space and choose the right size

Keep a quiet zone at least four modules wide. For close-range scanning, start around 2 × 2 cm and enlarge dense codes.

Test before bulk printing

Print a proof on the real material, at the final size, and scan it from the expected distance with several phones.

Best uses

When the information is meant to stay the same

Static QR codes work best for stable content, especially when direct scanning, privacy or offline access matters more than later editing.

Business cards and vCards

Let a customer save a stable name, phone number, email and company without typing each field.

Guest WiFi

Place the code in a café, office, hotel or homestay so guests can join without typing a case-sensitive password.

Product packaging

Link durable packaging to a stable product page, origin record or instructions that will remain available for the life of the item.

Documents and certificates

Print a stable verification address, record number or reference page on invoices, certificates and official documents.

Store signs and directions

Open a permanent website, Google Maps place or social profile from a counter sign, window decal or flyer.

Invitations and gifts

Attach a message, album or stable video page to a printed invitation, greeting card or personalized gift.

Equipment and assets

Label a machine with a fixed asset ID, serial reference, safety instruction or permanent service contact.

Books and learning materials

Add stable references, source material or answer pages to textbooks, worksheets and museum displays.

Frequently asked questions about static QR codes

Does a static QR code expire?

The QR pattern itself does not expire because its content is stored directly in the image. However, a website, PDF or shared file encoded in that pattern can move, expire or be deleted, so use a stable destination.

Can I edit the content later?

No. Changing even one character creates a different QR pattern. If the information may change after printing, create a dynamic QR code before you distribute it.

Why are long links harder to scan?

A static code must store the entire link. More characters require more modules, and those modules become smaller at the same printed size. Remove unnecessary tracking parameters or print the code larger.

How small can I print it?

For a simple code scanned at close range, start around 2 × 2 cm. Dense content, logos, textured material and longer scanning distances require a larger code. Always test the actual print.

Can a logo break the code?

It can if the logo is too large or covers a finder pattern. Keep it centered and modest, use suitable error correction, preserve contrast and test the final export.

Do WiFi and vCard QR codes need internet?

No. The phone can read WiFi credentials and contact fields directly from the QR code. Website, map and cloud-file links still need internet to open their destinations.

Can I see how many times a static QR code was scanned?

Not through the QR code itself. It opens content directly and has no managed redirect to count scans. Use a dynamic QR code when campaign reporting is required.

Which file should I use for printing?

Use SVG or another vector export when the print workflow supports it, especially for large signs. A high-resolution PNG is suitable for office documents and smaller prints when it is placed at its original quality.
